Literature Reviews

Research literature (books, articles etc.)

  • Donald C.F. Daniel, Patricia Taft, and Sharon Wiharta, eds., Peace Operations: Trends, Progress and Prospects. Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press, 2008.
  • Kille, Kent (2006): "From Manager to Visionary: The Secretary-General of the United Nations", Palgrave Macmillan

Quite simply: fascinating! groundbreaking!

  • Ellis, David. "The Organizational Turn in International Organization Theory" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the ISA's 49th ANNUAL CONVENTION, BRIDGING MULTIPLE DIVIDES, Hilton San Francisco, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA, Mar 26, 2008 http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p251200_index.html

Fascinating read about why we see IOs the way we do and how organizational theory could add to our anderstanding of IOs. Ellis claims that there is no reason that IOs internal workings shouldn't be considered while the internal workings of states are extensively researched as "both states and IOs are nothing more than corporate fictions" (p.15). Particularly interesting is the Three Images matrix on p. 22 which disentagles the different approaches, levels of analysis and methodologies in both IO and OT (organizational theory) research.

  • Amitav Acharya and Alastair Iain Johnston eds. (2007): Crafting Cooperation: Regional International Institutions in Comparative Perspective, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press.

Very interesting volume comparing the institutional designs of a number of regional organisations. Seeks to move beyond the rational institutional design approach by considering the effectiveness of institutional design.
